You will walk into my office building & find my office on the first floor at the front of the building.
Many high-school students choose to bring a support person like a parent to their first appointment. That person can join you for all, some, or none of the appointment. Most college- & grad-students and professionals come by themselves, but that’s up to you.
A doorbell will ring when you open the first door to the office and you will walk into a small waiting room with a few chairs, a bookcase, snacks, etc.
You’ll wait in the waiting room until your appointment time. When it’s time, Jessica will come out of her office and welcome you in.
Sometimes a previous client will be leaving as you are entering.
Everyone will find a seat at the table. On the table are fidgets to play with and any materials you might need (pens, notepads). If you’ve brought a planner, you could get that out now.
Jessica will lead a discussion to get to know you including asking about your hobbies and interests, what you like about school, what’s hard about school and what you wish was easier. We’ll also discuss your goals for this year and beyond.
The discussion will be mainly between you and Jessica but if you’ve brought a support person we’ll include them in the conversation.
Throughout the discussion, but particularly in the second half, we’ll begin talking about things you could choose to try to help you to reach your goals.
If you agree to try a tool, we’ll write it down so you have something to take home with you as a memory aid.
If at any point in the discussion you need a break, you can just ask for a break. You can go to the bathroom, get a snack, get a glass of water, walk around, hang out in the waiting room. If you brought a support person, we may continue the conversation while you’re taking a break.
At end of appointment we’ll have a discussion about how coaching could work for you. Jessica will make recommendations on scheduling another appointment. At that point you’re welcome to schedule appointments right away or to say “I’d like to think about it” if you’re not sure.
